Contaminated site remediation with genomics: Boosting bioremediation in South America

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the upcoming EMBO Practical Course titled “Contaminated site remediation with genomics: Boosting bioremediation in South America” , scheduled to take place from 20 to 28 October 2025 in Valparaíso, Chile

This hybrid course is a collaborative initiative between Chilean institutions—Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María  and Universidad de Playa Ancha—and European partners, including  Università degli Studi di Milano-BicoccaMicrobEco, and  M3R – Monitoring and Management of Microbial Resources.

The course aims to foster international cooperation in the field of bioremediation by promoting the use of sustainable technologies in South America and other regions. It seeks to bridge countries with varying levels of experience in environmental biotechnology applications. The programme is designed for young scientists interested in developing skills and expertise in environmental biotechnology.

Participants will engage in both field and laboratory activities, processing molecular data in bioinformatics sessions. A virtual roundtable will facilitate interactions among scientists, public authorities, companies, and citizens, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing environmental challenges.

Thanks to EMBO funding, most of the course costs are covered and reduced registration fees are offered. Furthermore, travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for eligible participants
